On February 9, Dr. LI Jia-yang, President of CAAS met with the visiting group from International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA) headed by Dr. Clive James, Board Chairman of ISAAA.
Dr. LI stated that the application of biotechnology in agriculture can expedite the breeding process of new varieties with high yield and stress resistance, which helps to safeguard food security in developing countries, increase farmers’ income, and eliminate poverty. He also said that ISAAA has played an important role in promoting the R&D and extension of biotechnology in agriculture, and expressed hope for stronger cooperation in such fields between CAAS and ISAAA.
Dr. James highlighted that with more investment into agricultural biotechnology, the varieties and extension areas of transgenic crops in countries including Brazil, Argentina and India have been increasing year by year. Meanwhile, Spain and other EU countries are promoting transgenic corns and potatoes. He also expected a broader extension of late blight-resistant potatoes, Golden Rice and other transgenic crops in the near future.
Dr. WANG Ren, Vice President of CAAS attended the meeting.
