Wu Kongming meets with Special Representative of UN Secretary-General
On March 15th at CAAS headquarters in Beijing, Vice President Wu Kongming met with Margareta Wahlström, special representative of the UN Secretary-General for disaster risk reduction, and both parties conducted in-depth exchanges on issues concerning agricultural disaster prevention and risk reduction.
Wu welcomed Wahlström for her visit and briefly introduced the basic information of CAAS’ science and technology development as well as the nation’s agriculture. Wu remarked that China is a country with comparatively severe natural disasters around the world and at present such disasters as drought, flood, heat damage, low temperature and freezing damage, and plant disease and insect pest have brought serious challenges to China’s food security. As a national-level agricultural R&D institution, CAAS hopes to give full play to its role in the agricultural disaster prevention and risk reduction and technology innovation under the mechanism of the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) and contribute its efforts to guaranteeing food security in China and the world.
Wahlström highly agreed with Wu’s suggestions and welcomed CAAS to actively participate in various activities under the mechanism of UNISDR and provide necessary technical support.
