Cooperation between CAAS and UC-Davis strengthened
President Li Jiayang met the Chancellor of University of California Davis Campus (UC-Davis), Ms. Linda P. B. Katehi-Tseregounis on October 18, to discuss follow up plans for agricultural science and technology cooperation between the two parties.
Li began the meeting by briefing the delegation about the development strategy, research priorities, disciplinary clusters and international cooperation of the academy. He also mentioned that, CASS and UC-Davis are well-known research institutions and both face similar challenges and problems in food security and agricultural research. He insisted the need of both sides to use their comparative advantages to contribute to the world food security. To make the process running, Li proposed detail plans for the cooperation, including, expansion of the scale of the stuff/student exchanges, jointly initiative of research programs and application of the funds from the international organizations.
Katehi-Tseregounis agreed the suggestions and proposals given and reveal the UC-Davis plans to increase its enrollment for Chinese students in the next academic year. At the end both parts agreed to have seminars next year (2014) to strengthen their bilateral cooperation in common interests.
The meeting was also attended by UD-Davis Vice Chancellors, Harris Lewin, Shaun B. Keister and William Lacy and CAAS Vice President Wu Kongming.
In 2004, CAAS and UC-Davis signed their first agreement for science and technology cooperation. Since then, a series of programs have been successfully conducted between the two parties in the fields of genetic resources, prevention and control of plant disease, biotechnology, etc. The agreement was renewed in 2011.
