CAAS and ILRI to further collaborate on ruminant disease control
On June 8, CAAS Vice President Li Jinxiang met with Dr. Iain Wright, DDG of International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI). After in-depth discussion on strengthening undergoing cooperation, the two sides signed two agreements on “establishing CAAS-ILRI Joint Lab on ruminant diseases control” and “renewing CAAS-ILRI Joint Lab on Livestock and Forage Genetic Resources” respectively.

Li appreciated the existing collaboration between CAAS and ILRI. “Established in 2004, the Joint Lab on Livestock and Forage Genetic Resources has played significant roles for conducting joint scientific research, staff exchange and training for both CAAS and ILRI,” Li said, “The new Joint lab on ruminant diseases control, which aims to strengthen the joint research on epidemic diseases investigation and rapid diagnose of animal diseases will further release the collaborative potential between the two institutes.” He also proposed the following 3 priorities for future cooperation. The three priorities are: to enhance the cooperative level by giving full play to the existing platforms, to strengthen the capacity building, and to jointly address major challenges of animal diseases control.
Wright endorsed Li’s proposal. He said that CAAS has always been regarded as one of the most important partners of ILRI. The two institutes have many shared priorities in the area of public health, environmental impacts of animal health, and animal disease control of small scale farmers, etc. He hopes the joint labs will lead to closer ties and more diversified collaborative modalities between the two institutes.
Prof. Feng Dongxin, DG of Dept. of International Cooperation, Prof. Jin Ke, DDG of the same Department; Dr. Yin Hong, DG of Lanzhou Institute of veterinary research and Dr. Wen Jie, DDG of Beijing Veterinary Research Institute also attended the meeting and witnessed the signing ceremony of the new agreements.
