The 4th International Symposium on Dairy Cow Nutrition and Milk Quality Held in Beijing
On May 8-10,the 4th International Symposium on Dairy Cow Nutrition and Milk Quality, jointly hosted by the Institute of Animal Sciences of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, American Dairy Science Association and Dairy Association of China, was held in Beijing.

The symposium came at a time when China’s dairy industry is facing huge challenges. In 2014, China’s dairy industry changed from “milk shortage” to “overproduction”,with the drop down of milk prices and the burst of “the scandal of pouring the milk” in some provinces. The development of China’s dairy industry calls for the quality improvement driven by science and technology progress.
To address these challenges, the Symposium sought to build an international platform for global dairy industry and experts to share knowledge and information. Twenty-nine invited international speakers from foreign countries including the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Ireland, Germany, Argentina, and Brazil together with 10 invited speakers from China made wonderful presentations during the Symposium. More than 600 people from universities, institutions, inspection agencies, dairy farms and dairy enterprises attended the symposium.

Dr. Alois Kertz, chairman of American Dairy Science Association, was invited to share the development of American dairy science. Professor Robert Collier from University of Arizona, Professor Michael Allen from Michigan State University and Dr. Harinder Makkar from FAO gave keynote speeches in the field of dairy nutrition development, feed intake controlling and Asian animal science, respectively.
Themed on “challenge and cooperation”, this symposium has three sessions, namely “Advances in Fundamental Research”, “Advances in Milk Quality and Safety” and “Advances in New Technology and Products”. In the session of Advances in Fundamental Research, rumen microbiome, interaction of gut microbe and host, pathway of milk biosynthesis in mammary gland were introduced. In the session of Advances in Milk Quality and Safety, the latest development in risk management, milk inspectional methods and milk microbiology were shared. The session of Advances in New Technology and Products, focused on the progress of forage treatment, heat stress management, calf feeding and mycotoxin controlling.
To encourage the graduates to pursue their career in dairy research and their involvement in international cooperation, the symposium also set the graduate forum. 13 graduates were invited to present their research progress in dairy science. 38 international experts formed the judging panel and one first prize, two second prizes and three third prizes were awarded to the speakers based on the expert review and evaluation.
