Prof. Chen Minpeng elected as Co-Chair of the UNFCCC Adaptation Committee
Prof. Chen Minpeng from the Institute of Environment and Sustainable Development in Agriculture (IEDA), Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences(CAAS)was recently elected as the Co-Chair of the ninth meeting of Adaptation Committee, as nominated by the all non-annex I members. Adaptation Committee is a constituted body of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which aims to promote the implementation of enhanced adaptation action in a coherent manner under the Convention by providing technical support and guidance to the Parties.
IEDA of CAAS has been devoted to the climate change studies in the agricultural sector for decades and cultivated a competitive team comprising of senior, middle-career and early-career scientists in this field. As a young talent with rich experience in the UNFCCC negotiation, Chen and her colleagues are now committing to the policy analysis relevant to climate mitigation and adaptation. Her newly post in the Adaptation Committee will lead the task forces for implementing Paris Agreement pursuant to the mandates previous and future COP and CMA decisions.
As part of the Cancun Adaptation Framework, the Adaptation Committee was established in 2010 and is the only Committee under UN that comprehensively addresses adaption, including by raising the profile of, enhancing collaboration on, and catalyzing, adaptation at all levels. The Adaptation Committee now comprises 16 members including 2 from the five UN regional groups, 1 from a small island developing state, 1 from a least developed country parties, 2 from Annex I Parties and 2 from Parties not included in Annex I to the Convention.
