CAAS President Participated in the 3rd International Rice Congress
November 7-13, CAAS President Dr. Zhai Huqu participated in the 3rd International Rice Congress held in Hanoi, Vietnam, one of the most important initiatives in the rice community. He also attended the 2010 Annual Meeting of the Board of Trustees of IRRI as a board member.
Under the theme “Rice for Future Generations”, the 3rd International Rice Congress (IRC2010) gathered together more than 1,700 top rice scientists, researchers, policymakers, and industry representatives from 66 countries around the world. Vietnamese Prime Minister Mr. Nguyen Tan Dung, Director General of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) Dr. Robert S. Zeigler and President of International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Dr. Kanayo Nwanze addressed the opening ceremony. Dr. Zhai and other leaders from international organizations were warmly received by the Vietnamese Prime Minister before the Opening Ceremony.
At the Ministerial-level Roundtable on Rice, one listed item on the agenda of the Congress, Dr. Zhai Huqu introduced rice production and its challenges in China and proposed five suggestions for enhancing international cooperation on rice research: first, closer collaboration with IRRI and other international partners through dynamic participation in key programs of CGIAR and its centres; second, sharing China’s experience on hybrid rice through bilateral and multilateral cooperation on functional genomes and hybrid breeding; third, research on the rice planthopper with ASEAN countries; fourth, building platforms for rice research, including the rice molecular breeding centre and the rice quality and nutrition joint research centre; fifth, capacity building, equipping the rice farmers with information technology and hosting training courses and international conferences to boost academic exchange.
At the meeting of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Zhai and other 14 board members reviewed plans for Global Rice Science Partnership (GRiSP), one of the Mega Programs or CRPs initiated by CGIAR. He also shared with other members the idea on the construction of IRRI-CAAS Joint Centre for Molecular Breeding in Shenzhen, China, which would help integrate germplasm resources, information, human resources and investment on rice.
The International Rice Congress is held every four years. In 2002, the first Congress was held in Beijing.
