Vulnerability Assessment and Poverty Reduction in six poor counties in China
The Workshop on Vulnerability Assessment and Poverty Reduction was held in Beijing China on 14th November 2013. The workshop was organized by Agricultural Information Institute (AII) of CAAS and World Food Programme (WFP) focusing on “Food Security and Nutrition in Six Poor Counties in Rural China”, in the framework of UN-Spanish Millennium Development Goal Fund Project. The workshop aimed at: (1) to share and disseminating the achievements and main findings of the project of “Food Security and Nutrition in Six Poor Counties in Rural China”; and (2) to discuss crucial issues for China’s future food and nutrition security.


Under the chairperson, Mr. Brett Rierson, China Representative of World Food Programme (WFP), the workshop was opened with open remarks from Mr. Qu Sixi, Deputy Director of the International Cooperation Department of Ministry of Agriculture (MOA), Mr. Percy Misika, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Representative in China, DPR Korea and Mongolia, Mr. Stanlake Samkange, Director of Policy, Programme and Innovation of World Food Programme (WFP), and Mr. Meng Xianxue, Deputy Director of Agricultural Information Institute (AII) of CAAS.
Thereafter, the project leader, Prof. Nie Fengying, Director of International Information Division of AII provide the final research results of baseline survey in 2010 and the follow up survey in 2012. The baseline survey report narrates analysis of food security and vulnerability in six poverty counties in rural China which was published in 2011. Another follow up survey report will be published in 2014. The project report clearly mentioned how many people are in the situation of food insecure, where are they, who are they, why they are suffering food insecure, and what is their nutrition security status.
Interactive panel discussions headed by ten panelist discussed on how domestic research institutes and international partners should work together to improve the food and nutrition security status of poor people in China. They also discuss on how to make use of research findings as well as making policies that are applicable in recent situation and what to do to overcome challenges of food and nutrition security in the next 10 years.
WFP experts commend on the high achievements made on the project, with great emphasis on effort given on practical experience for food security and vulnerability analysis. WFP representative in China express high gratitude to Prof. Nie Fengying and her team for their fruitful contributions, and articulated his appreciation by promising to strengthen cooperation and jointly commitment to reduce poverty, and to improve food security and nutrition.
