CAAS to extend cooperation with European partners
A high-level delegation headed by Dr. Li Jiayang, Vice Minister of Agriculture (MOA) and President of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), paid an official visit to Europe from November 12-18, 2013.
On November 13th 2013, the CAAS delegation visited Ghent University and Vlaams Instituut Biotechnologie (VIB). A five-year partnership agreement was signed aiming at developing joint projects and postdoctoral student exchanging between CAAS and Ghent University. On November 14th 2013, the delegation paid a formal visit to the Headquarters of European Commission in Bruselles. While meeting with Mr. Jerzy Plewa, Director-General AGRI and Mr. Rudolf Strohmeier, Deputy Director-General RTD at the Headquarters of European Commission, the delegation discussed the joint innovative projects via ASTIP (the agricultural science and technology innovation program initiated by CAAS in March this year) at CAAS and Horizon-2020 at EU.

The main purposes of this visit to the Wageningen UR, on November 15th 2013, was to update the ongoing collaboration by renewing the Memorandum of Understanding on education and research and exchanging ideas on the current and future cooperation in agricultural research and education. Both CAAS and Wageningen UR are very motivated to deepen and broaden the current collaboration in the following fields such as: food safety, animal diseases, PhD programme, etc.
On the same day at Wageningen UR, Dr. Li gave a lecture to the students entitled “Understanding of the Molecular Mechanisms Underlying Rice Tillering”. Previous to this, the delegation visited Rikilt Institute for Food Safety and Keygene Company, a famous biotechnology company of the Netherlands.

During their stay in France from November 17-18 2013, Dr. Li and his delegation visited the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forest (MAFF) and several French research organizations and institutes: Agreenium, INRA headquarters and the Clermont-Ferrand-Lyon Centre, Groupe Limagrain and Agroparitech. The delegation signed the memorandum of understanding for institutional cooperation with Agreenium and the letter of intent with INRA on furthering the joint scientific cooperation.
