National Technology and Science Award Ceremony 2011 was held on February 14 2012 in Great Hall of the People. Four research fellows from the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Science (CAAS) received National Technology and Science Award. CHENG Shi-hua, Director General of China National Rice Research Institute, was conferred the second prize of National Technology Invention Award 2011 for heading the research on the application of post functional super hybrid rice techniques. The second prize of National Technology and Science Advancement Award was conferred to three CAAS fellows: LI Shao-kun at Institute of Crop Sciences of CAAS for his development and application of theory and techniques of high yield and high efficiency corn production system; LI Yun-chang at Institute of Oil Crops of CAAS for heading the research in the breeding and application of high yield, high oil-content and widely applicable oilseed rape - Zhongyouza 11; and ZHANG Hong-fu at Institute of Animal Sciences of CAAS for developing and application of nutrition manipulation feeds to improve health and growth of piglet.
CHENG’s research team has successfully developed post functional super hybrid rice breeding technique to enhance photosynthetic efficiency in rice late growth period. The research has led to the creation of over 80 varieties, 4 patents and 4 items of New Variety of Plant. The new technique was introduced to 150 million mu (10 million ha) of rice fields. 7 hybrid rice varieties, including Guodao 1 and 6, have been introduced to 33.58 million mu (2.24 million ha) of rice fields in South China, creating social and economic benefits of 1.41 billion yuan.

Seven years of dedicated research by LI Shao-kun’s team have led to 13 production systems adapted to different ecological environments. The new technique increased corn yield and broke a series of national yield records. 10 of the 13 production systems are selected by the Ministry of Agriculture to be promoted in 76 demonstration counties across 16 major corn-producing provinces.

By using multiple hybridizing techniques, LI Yun-chang’s team has created Zhongyouza 11, a new oilseed variety with consistent high yield, early maturity, disease- and lodging-resistance, high oil content and wide applicability. The new variety was introduced to three pilot corn land patches in the upper-, middle- and lower-reaches of the Yangtze River in 2003 and 2004. Zhongyouza 11 on average yields 173.26 kg/ mu (about 2598.9 kg/ha) , representing an 11.77% increase in production, higher than any other varieties. Zhongyouza 11 is also the first oilseed rape with oil content exceeding 46%. The oil production per mu of the three pilot land patches was 77.4 kg on average, 24.36% higher than other varieties. The new variety has been grown on 3000 mu (200ha) of land, creating economic benefits of over 3 billion yuan.

After 18 years of research, ZHANG Hong-fu’s team has studied calorie, protein and amino acid piglets need, developed a new piglet feed formulation method and invented 2 proprietary piglet feed additives, 3 pre-mixed pig feeds, 2 concentrated feeds and 2 formulated feeds, which have applied for patent protection. These new feeds use domestic sources, cause less resistance and irritation, and lower the incidents of diarrhea. The new feeds increase number of pigs by 1.2 to 1.5 per farrow. 9.312 million tons of the new feed were produced and introduced nationally (including 680,000 tons of pre-mixed and 35,000 tons of additives), generating 43.5 billion yuan of sales and over 6 billion yuan of tax revenue. The indirect economic benefits for pig farmers amounted to 20.51 billion yuan.
Four CAAS recipients were issued the second prize of National Technology and Science Awards: Harbin Institute of Veterinary Research of CAAS for developing a range of control and prevention techniques targeted at diseases that obstruct normal pig reproduction; Zhengzhou Institute of Pomology of CAAS for the innovative application of pear self-fertility; Institute of Special Economic Animal and Plant Sciences of CAAS for breeding and standardizing the cultivation of new ginseng variety.
