Novel Insights into Rice Innate Immunity against Bacterial and Fungal Pathogens
Rice (Oryza sativa) is a staple food crop for over 50% of the world’s population, with the majority of rice consumption occurring in developing countries. A large number of pathogenic microorganisms cause important diseases in rice, leading to significant yield losses worldwide and threatening global food security. Recently, researchers at State Key Laboratory for Biology of Plant Diseases and Insect Pests, Institute of Plant Protection (IPP) of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) have published a review paper about rice innate immunity against bacterial and fungal pathogens.

Rice innate immunity signaling pathways triggered by the bacterial blight and fungal blast pathogens
In this paper, the authors first briefly described the important diseases during rice production and the molecular analysis of rice diseases. And then, the whole paper emphasized on PAMPs-Triggered Immunity (PTI) and Effector-Triggered Immunity (ETI) recognition and signaling in rice. The latest novel findings on flagellin-OsFLS2-, chitin-LysM domain protein-, peptidoglycan-LysM domain protein-, and Xa21-mediated immunity; signaling events downstream of PAMP recognition, such as OsSERK2-, SPL11-, and OsRAC1-mediated immunity; mechanisms of effector function, including effector targeting of the host cell proteasome to suppress PTI, fungal effector mimicry of chitin receptors to suppress chitin-induced PTI, and Xanthomonas TAL effector reprogramming host gene transcription; have been intensive discussed. At last, the authors also gave seven future issues that need to be addressed, such as what are the functions of effector targets in rice for PTI and/or ETI? How can we use the knowledge of pathogen effector and R gene biology for practical disease control in rice?
