CAAS VP made presentation to the Standing Committee Members of 12th CPPCC National Committee

On August 28, during the 12th working session of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) held in Beijing, CAAS Vice President Wu Kongming made a presentation entitled “The development of GM technology and the food safety” to the Standing Committee Members.

In his presentation, Wu illustrated the evolution and R&D tendency of GM technology in China, China’s safety assessment management for the GMOs and other hot debating issues. He also proposed several suggestions for advancing GM technologies in China.

“Development of GM technology is significant for improving the competitiveness of agriculture technology and ensuring the food safety in China,” Wu said.

The safety of GM technologies embody both in food and in environment. China has now established a strict 4-level evaluation and management system covering the phases of experimental research, pilot, release to the environment, pre-production, application of certification. With reference to detail data, Wu also introduced and analyzed into the global development and commercialization of GM crops.
