New Method of Producing Agricultural Antibiotic Won China Patent Award
State Intellectual Property Office of China officially announced winners of the 14th session of China Patent Award on Nov. 30th, 2012. CAAS developed new method for producing agriculture antibiotic by using the soil microbes Streptomyces lavendulae var. hainanessis n.var has won the excellent prize.
A research team led by Prof. Zhu Chang-xiong from the Institute of Environment and Sustainable Development in Agriculture (IEDA) of CAAS has successfully developed Zhongshengmycin, a novel type of biological pesticide , which was discovered from the secondary metabolites of Streptomyces lavendulae var. hainanessis n.var. Zhongshengmycin is a broad spectrum antibiotic, which displays inhibition activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacterium, mycobacterium, saccharomycetes, filamentous fungus. It can effectively control some plant diseases including the rice bacterial leaf blight, apple ring spot, apple altermaria leaf spot, citrus canker, cabbage soft rot, and cucumber angular leaf spot. With the low toxicity to human and animals and the short residual period in environment, Zhongshengmycin has been accredited as a biological pesticide used for AA level green food production. It has won the National New Product Prize in 1996, the second prize for S&T development awards of MOA in 1999, and the second prize of National S&T Award in 2006.
Since 2003, this patent has been exclusively transferred to KLbios for market extension. The annual production of Zhongshengmycin is about 800 tons and the sales volume can get to 40 million with an annual profit of 13 million RMB.
China Patent Award is the only specialized government award for inventions with patents and aims at commending inventors, designer, patent holders who have made outstanding contribution to technical innovation and social and economic progress.
