China Society for Horticultural Science and Beijing Sinoref Agricultural Development Co., Ltd. recently released the list of Sinoref Horticulture Technology Awards. “Breeding of Dwarf Pear Germplasm and Dwarf Pear Stocks” research team led by Professor Jiang Shuling from Institute of Pomology of CAAS, won 2014 Award.

Pears are cultivated widely in China, but there were no suitable dwarf stocks and dwarf varieties in practice. To solve this problem, a series of dwarf resources have been bred, including 5 pear dwarf stocks with good graft compatibility to both oriental and western pears, 30 new dwarf pear clones with high fruit quality, and 10 new dwarf pear germplasms with open canopy. Among of them, the dwarf stocks of ‘Zhongai 1’ and ‘Zhongai 2’, the new varieties of ‘Jinxiang’, ‘Aixiang’, ‘Xianghongmi’ and ‘Zaojinxiang’ have been widely used in pear production.

It is the first time that Matching cultivation techniques with dwarf pear resources is developed in China, which makes density planting with dwarf stocks and excellent variety combination become a reality. It is a great breakthrough to the traditional cultivation techniques.
30 demonstration pear orchards of high density planting system with dwarf stocks have been established in many pear-producing areas in China. In this cultivation system, 38%~50% of labor is saved during pruning and pest control, and 1~3 times harvest efficiency is raised compared with traditional cultivation system.

This research achievement has enriched the pear dwarf resources largely, and further promoted the adjustment of the pear varieties structure, increased farmers’ income, and improved the environment protection and sustainable development of pear industry.
