ZFRI two new peach cultivars win Henan provincial award
According to the news from Zhengzhou Fruit Research Institute (ZFRI) of CAAS, its research achievement of the two new early-mature, good storability, full-colored peach cultivars, ‘Chunm’ peach and ‘Chunmei’ peach was awarded the second prize of the 2013 Annual Henan Province Technology Progress Award.
‘Chunmi’ matures in mid of June in Zhengzhou, central China. The fruits characterized by nearly round shape, with an average weight of 126 grams for small size and above 200 grams largest size. After maturity, the fruits have complete and uniform color with white flesh, excellent quality and 12.1% soluble solids content. It’s self-fruitful, stable and high yield.
‘Chunmi’ matures in mid of June in Zhengzhou, central China. The fruits characterized by nearly round shape, with an average weight of 126 grams for small size and above 200 grams largest size. ‘Chunmei’ matures in mid-to-late of June. The fruits characterized by round shape, with an average weight of 180-220 grams for small size and more than 250 grams for largest size. After maturity, the fruits have full-colored beautiful appearance with good quality. It’s white flesh with soluble solids content of 12.8%. It’s self-fruitful, high and stable yield.
By the end of 2012, the planted area of ‘Chunmi’ and ‘Chunmei’ was about 35.1 thousand hectares around the country, with annual economic turnover of 4.405 billion yuan, which an increment of over 3 billion yuan per annual. At present, the planted area for these two cultivars is tremendous increasing as ideal replacement of early maturing peach variety.
According to Dr. Wang Zhiqiang, head of the peach breeding team at ZFRI, the adherence for the long-term research work on peach breeding, managed to cultivate 11 nectarine varieties and 3 peach varieties which has made a remarkable and important progress for the peach industry in China.
The team also won the first ‘Huanai Horticulture Science & Technology Award’ in 2012 issued by the Chinese Horticultural Society.
