On January 14, good news came from National Science and Technology Award Meeting that dwarf, male-sterile wheat and other four achievements of CAAS have won national S&T Award. LIU Bing-hua, senior researcher with Institute of Crop Sciences of CAAS, led the project “the creation and application of dwarf, male-sterile wheat and its efficient breeding method” which won the first prize of 2010 National Science and Technology Progress Awards. LI Fu-guang, Deputy Director General of Institute of Cotton Research of CAAS, completed the project “the platform construction for the purification and foreign gene function verification of cotton tissue culture” which won the second prize of 2010 national technological invention awards. Other projects winning the second prize for 2010 national Science and Technology progress awards include “the research and application of risk assessment and prevention technology about bollworm’s resistance to Bt Cotton” by Dr. WU Kong-ming with Institute of Plant Protection of CAAS, “the technology and application of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome control” by CAI Xuehui with Harbin Institute of Veterinary Research of CAAS and “the creation and application of important rice germplasm” by Dr. QIAN Qian with China National Rice Research Institute of CAAS.
Aiming at creating new breeding method and increasing breeding efficiency of wheat, Prof. LIU Bing-hua and his team had done research for nearly 30 years and bred the dwarf, male-sterile wheat and the efficient breeding method. This achievement has been applied to hundreds of areas in China with newly-bred 42 varieties in 185 million mu of land and a total increase of 5.6 billion kilograms wheat.
