New Silkworm Commercial Production in Jiangsu
“Wild hybrid complex 1” is a new silkworm variety bred by Sericultural Institute of CAAS, which characterized by good feeding habits, strong disease resistance, high cocoon yield and high silk quality. WHC1 (Wild hybrid complex 1) combines the adversity resistance of wild silkworm and the high silk amount of domestic silkworm, has anti-NPV (nuclear polyhedrosis virus) trait and was selected from double cross breeding.
WHC1 was demonstrated and small scale reared in SuiNing (the major sericultural country of Jiangsu Province) from 2009. After characters conformation WHC1 was batch fed in whole SuiNing country scale in autumn of 2014. Yield investigation indicated WHC1 kilogram cocoon number is 520-540 which is higher than that in control variety “Jingsong×Haoyue”. Now the cocoons have been purchased by silk factories in high grade cocoon price after sample cocoon silk reeling.
The batch fed of WHC1 in SuiNing in the sericulture season gets support from Jiangsu Province Commission of Agriculture and Sericultural Institute of CAAS. Dr. Zhang GouZheng, the Director General of Sericultural Institute as well as Research Director of National Sericulture Technology System Silkworm Rearing Function Laboratory visited sericultural farmers for rear sites investigation many times. Wu YangChun, the leading scientist of WHC1 breeding group, together with experts of Sericulture Extension Station of Jiangsu Province and local officials and technologist visited more than hundreds WHC1 rearing families to guarantee the production.
In this batch rearing, silkworm new variety WHC1 performed the characters of development synchronous, less diseases and high yield. Because of this new variety good feeding habits, anti-blood virus diseases and easy rearing, WHC1 has been accepted by silkworm rearing families. Local agricultural department said that WHC1 has excellent production traits and less production risk so they decided taking WHC1 as a major silkworm production variety in next 5 years. This batch fed also drew other sericultural key countries’ interest and attention.
