On September 28,a new apple variety, Huaping, bred by researchers from the Institute of Pomology Research of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (IPR-CAAS), passed appraisal from the Bureau of Seed Management of Liaoning Province.

According to the information from IPR-CAAS, its average fruits mass is 177g, with a good appearance, small fruit dots and thick wax layer. The flesh is crisp and juicy, and flavor is sweet with moderate tart. The shelf-life under normal condition is about 20 days. It grows vigorously and bears mainly on medium-long branches at young fruit stage, and on short-medium branches at full productive age.

Its self-pollination rate was very low, therefore it is important to match pollination varieties such as Fuji, Hanfu, Gala and Shanxia, etc in production. It can begin setting fruits after planting for only three years and average productivity amounts to 20 kg per plant for five years tree. In Liaoning western area, it blooms on early May and its fruit ripens on late September, the fruit developing period is around 140 days. It is tolerant of cold weather and resistant to branch ring rod disease.

Huaping is an medium-late cultivar, with stable high yields and slight pre-harvest drop. Experts who participated in appraisal meeting agreed that it is suitable to be planted in apple growing area South of Huludao City, Liaoning Province.
