“Zhongshuang 11”, the Rape Champion in Oil Content
Research team led by Professor WANG Han-zhong of the Oil Research Institute, CAAS finally succeeded after 8 years’ effort in breeding the new rape variety “Zhongshuang 11”, which is most renowned for its high oil content and excellent “double-low” performance.
The oil content of “Zhongshuang 11” rapeseed is as high as 49.04%, 7-8 percentage point higher than the normal varieties grown in the Yangtze River basin in China and even 2-4 percentage point higher than varieties in Canada, one of the world’s major oil seed export countries. It is calculated that one percentage point higher in the oil content will generate an additional 700 million yuan of economic returns for China’s rapeseed industry.
What is also noticeable, the new variety demonstrates extreme “double-low” performance with zero content of erucic acid and low glucosinolate content that far excels the international standard.
Besides, it is well-received by farmers thanks to its good qualities like early maturity, high level of disease resistance, lodging resistance and high yield.
