A New Generation of Cloned Transgenic Pigs Rich in Fish Oil
The Institute of Animal Sciences (IAS), CAAS, in collaborating with other institutes recently gave life to a cloned transgenic pig rich in ω-3fatty acids, which is the major component of dietary fish oil. This piglet weighs 1.15 kilos at birth and is in good health status.
ω-3 fatty acid, known as dietary fish oil, can be divided into three subtypes: DHA, EPA and ALA. It is one of the essential fatty acids that human cannot construct within the organism from other components but obtained from the diet. Fish oil is a good supplement to the body in preventing cardiovascular diseases. The cultivation of the new generation of cloning pigs marks a significant progress in quality pork enrichment in China.
