Recently, the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Center for International Agricultural Research (CIAR) of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) and Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV) took place in Beijing. The MoU was signed by Prof. Sun Tan, Vice President of CAAS and Director of the CIAR, and Prof. Guilherme Bastos, Coordinator of FGV Agro. Under the framework of the MoU, both parties agreed to deepen scientific cooperation in key agricultural products such as soybeans, beef, and aquatic products, conduct joint field research, promote knowledge sharing, and enhance exchanges and visits among young scientists, with an aim to advance food security, poverty reduction, and rural development in China and Brazil. The signing ceremony was attended by the Agricultural Attaché of the Brazilian Embassy in China, along with senior officials from the CAAS Department of International Cooperation and the CAAS Agricultural Information Institute (AII).

Later that day, the “China-Brazil Green Agricultural Products Value Chain Development Cooperation Workshop” was successfully held at the National Agricultural Library of CAAS, organized by the CIAR. The event was attended by representatives from the Brazilian Embassy in China, FGV, the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) China Office, the World Economic Forum (WEF), the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation (CAITEC) of the Ministry of Commerce, the China Soybean Industry Association, the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Foodstuffs, Native Produce and Animal By-Products (CFNA), the Institute of Finance and Sustainability (IFS), DBN Group, Bell Consulting (Beijing), and several CAAS institutes, including the Institute of Agricultural Economics and Development (IAED), the Institute of Crop Sciences, the Biotechnology Research Institute, and the AII.

Dr. Dai Xin, Deputy Director General of the AII of CAAS, and Mr. Leandro Feijó, Agricultural Attaché of the Brazilian Embassy in China, delivered opening remarks. The workshop centered on research and platform development for the China-Brazil green value chain, with a focus on strengthening cooperation between the two nations, both leading global agricultural producers, in areas such as green production technologies, trade regulations, and standards for major commodities like soybeans and beef. Participants also emphasized enhancing the sustainability and transparency of the agricultural supply chain, implementing green standards in both countries, minimizing the ecological impact of agricultural production, and advancing the green transformation of the China-Brazil agricultural supply chain.

This workshop was the first significant meeting following the signing of the MoU between the CIAR and FGV. Experts, scholars, and representatives from the business and financial sectors engaged in in-depth discussions to identify research directions and priorities, which laid a solid foundation for future collaborative research and platform development in the China-Brazil green value chain.
